Xytron take Delivery of Laminar flow cabinet. July 2010

Xytron Ltd
of Hereford were formed in 2004 with a  claimed  class 10 clean room they have reportedly completed some 5000 recoveries in the last 6 years.*

There has been a lot of controversy regarding clean room certification during the last few years because of the number of contaminated and damaged drives arriving at certified data recovery labs with the kind of damage and contamination which could have resulted from interference by the client, but due to the quantity it became clear certain DR companies were damaging drives before sending them back as unrecoverable.

This  culminated in early 2009 with  the rush to join IPDRA by many of the UK data recovery companies **. With many claiming ISO-5 and better clean room certification without independant testing and posting their annual certificates online.

It has become clear that  the sole purpose of the company behind the Compare IT /  Just Compare (www.comparedatarecovery.co.uk) was to mislead and malign many UK data recovery companies in favour of the Fields Group "Brands" and yet another misleading claim of Investor in people accreditation was shown to be out of date.

As the owner and founder of a growing data recovery and disaster recovery group myself, I looked long and hard for a marketing solution to promote my companies data recovery services,  but  met a lot of resistance from those who had  been supporting the online bashing of my company.

Some  had not realised that  they were only identifying themselves with the rogues of the industry by joining in,  and that my company had been exposing the scams long before The IPDRA. (The International Professional Data Recovery Association), there is no wonder that some companies do not like being known to have been involved in the Fields Data Recovery  / Rapid Track / Rapid Data / Data Phoenix scams. and have tried to distance themselves from it.

Xytrons owner Richard Cuthbertson as a fellow of IPDRA and committe member with Honorary Member Simon Steggles of DiskLabs Ltd  is helping set the standard that the other members should follow but there is more to the debate about clean room certification than first meets the eye.

I have posted questions about my concerns regarding some of the IPDRA Membership here-  Questions to be asked before joining IPDRA

Whilst I have no qualms admitting that the DRC Directory of Data Recovery Companies is primarily a marketing and news promotion website it is also intended to give potential clients an informed choice.

IPDRA has claimed to be an association representing the DR industry. However it can never be taken seriously until it is correctly  funded  and has regular conferences to debate the issues facing data recovery companies, and identified  those involved in sharp practice, PPC Fraud and misleading marketing.

The attempts by a few individual technicians to misinform consumers by claiming the seal of  IPDRA Membership to be a validation of their professional claims has in itself caused me to remain outside IPDRA until a full investigation has been completed.

It is clear the leaders of IPDRA are committed to cleaning up the poor image of UK  data recovery at last but how will it achieve this Internationally ?. It  will require the IPDRA committee to validate all its members: after the influx of companies claiming clean rooms and secure premises it is not clear who has certification and who does not. Many who are claiming IPDRA membership  hoping to  make money without investing the necessary funds in training and equipment often charging for work they do not carry out yet openly attacking non members.

What is clear is that in order for IPDRA to become a true association and not just be seen as notionary club, the founders must continue with one of its original goals;  i.e  to expose the rogues in the data recovery industry involved in the comparedatarecovery fiasco.

DiskLabs owner and the founder member of IPDRA  Simon Steggles has started the ball rolling for his membership to comply with the IPDRA articles of association.  Disklabs clean room certificate has been online for several months now. *

This sets the tone that at last the data recovery industry in the UK and beyond must take seriously the problem of companies that claim skills and certifications years before achieving them. They must ensure that consumers are not given a false impression of a company because it claims a membership of an International association.

Xytron class 10 (iso-4) clean room certificate has yet to be published but when confirmed will be considerably better than those who claim class 100  / ISO-5 certification. This again should help identify the UK data recovery industry as leading the way to improving success rates and offering consumers and businesses the best possible chance of a successful recovery at a reasonable price.

I for one as owner of a group of data recovery companies have invested heavily in an ISO-3 Certified clean room and a team of data recovery experts who can respond to almost any data loss situation.

What has become evident is there are many companies claiming to offer data recovery services and attempting clean room procedures on clients drives when they do not have the experience or resources necessary to maximise the chance of a successful recovery.

Many companies claiming 5,000 or 10,000 or recoveries over a number of years obviously do not have the capacity to cope with thousands of recoveries per year. In reality there are only a handful of labs geared for this scale of operations, and they provide data recovery lab services to many data recovery companies, resellers, partners and IT Professionals as a well as direct to the public.

This scale of operations enables fixed pricing structures to be established and the highest success rates achieved, bringing the economies of scale to bring data recovery to more consumers by developing more resellers of data recovery services in every city.

By upgrading  out of date class 100 clean room facilities and adopting modern annual ISO certification procedures the UK data recovery industry will be able to reassure consumers their hard disk drive will not be contaminated during the repair or rebuild attempt.

However buying, installing and certifying a clean room is not a guarantee of a successful rebuild. This requires that the technicians using the facility are trained and experienced in all aspects of HSA and Platter swap procedures to ensure a maximum chance of a recovery. (there are other technical improvements of course)

Abc Data Recovery Ltd have been campaigning for all DR companies to show their  annual clean room certification after a number of DR companies were making claims of class 100 or better,  yet it was clear that they were contaminating drives.

abc Data Recovery Ltd posts it's re-certified clean room certifcate online annually and has always achieved BS14644-1 class3  shortened  to IS0-3 ( equivelent to the previous fed209e class1) .

By improving clean room procedures success rates go up and throughput of completed hard disk rebuilds is much improved, this helps towards bringing average invoice prices down for the consumer.

ABC Data Recovery completed 5000 recoveries in the last year see article about upgrade of their high capacity lab in 2010.

We look forward to announcing more developments from Xytron and IPDRA.
