What is a SAN
What is a SAN
Description
What is a SAN?
Storage solutions tend to come with a variety of acronyms and unless you work in the IT industry these can sometimes be a bit confusing to say the least.
SAN stands for storage area network and is a method of attaching remote (often offsite) storage components to local networks (specifically servers) so that to the end user the "drives" appear to be totally local.
As has been historic with many external storage solutions costs tend to be quite high so it tends to be only the largest companies that have this requirement or for that matter have been able to afford it.
SAN does allow a good degree of redundancy as much of the data is offsite but this type of technology is becoming more affordable with the increasing popularity of online server backup solutions, and solution providers also supplying remote storage facilities.
