Usb 3.0 To Lead The Way In Data Transfer Speeds
USB 3.0 is soon to become standard interface for most hard disk drive storage units and here we examine the benefits of either upgrading or using this new improved interface.
Since its introduction USB has become the most common form of data transfer interface between a desktop / laptop or MAC machine and the storage device attached to it, regardless of if this is a usb memory stick or hard disk drive. Other forms of interface include the Firewire connection and the e-SATA - both at present enjoy advantages over USB2.0 with regard to the speed of data transfer between storage entities. At present a consumer can enjoy a data transfer speed of 25MB per second via a USB2.0 connection. This was a significant improvement from USB1.1 which had a slow data transfer rate of just 1MB/S. However MAC users and others using Firewire 800 would benefit from increased data transfer speeds of up to 80MB/s which when transferring 500GB of data has significant time savings.
eSATA gave further significant improvements as well with transfer speeds regularly obtained of 150MB/s.
The new USB3.0 standard will beat all of these present data transfer speeds comfortably with a new record speed of up to 400MB/s. This effectively means that 24GB of data can theoretically be transferred in a minute provided you are able to enjoy benefit from the maximum speed permitted. Although USB3.0 was rolled out in January 2010 it will be some time before you can benefit from using this new standard unless you upgrade your existing PC or laptop which will require you to add a new board into the machine. Presently USB2.0 established in an existing machine will not pass on any benefit in improved data transfer speeds if you plug in a USB3.0 external hard disk.
