Trading Standards departments accross the country are to become more proactive in identifying rogue traders.

West Berkshire Council's Trading Standards Service is to start regular anti-rogue trading patrols.

Excerpt from the article*
The patrols will include spot checks to ensure that those involved in home repairs and maintenance work have been lawfully engaged by the householder and there is no evidence of illegal trading. They will also be looking to ensure that rules regarding cancellation rights are followed and that the home owner is not being pressurised to have work done that is not needed or subject to any other types of fraud.

Trading Standards regularly receive complaints from members of the public who have become victims of rogue trader activity. These often include cold calling and failure to give the householder the opportunity to cancel because of spiraling costs where charges run to thousands of pounds for work that isn't needed or has not been done at all.

Hilary Cole, West Berkshire Executive Councillor for Public Protection said: "Whilst anybody can become a victim of rogue trader activity this type of offence is often perpetrated on the most vulnerable in society. The level of financial loss to those that become victims can run into many thousands of pounds. Often the person committing the crime will not stop until the victim paid over all their savings. It is not uncommon for them to then walk of the job leaving the householder with the problem of getting the work put right with no funds."

As we have seen in the Data Recovery Industry similar rogue traders claiming £79 and £97 data recovery have baited many to part with many hundreds and sometime many thousands of pounds for little more than a report explaining why they were unsuccessful in completing the data recovery.

Despite exposing Internet fraud and data recovery scams the internet is a wild west frontier when it comes to gold diggers who have no qualms when it come to taking money for little or no service.
