Description
Seagate was first founded in 1979 by Alan Shugart and Finis Conner and was originally called Shugart Technology and the companies first product was a 5mb hard disc which proved very popular at the time.
Seagate was fortunate to secure a major oem contract with IBM for hard disc supply in its formulative years which saw its rapid growth into the emerging personal computer market and is considered by many to be one of the major the foundations that allowed Seagate to grow into the company it is today.
Embarking on a different strategy to one of it's main competitors at the time,
Maxtor
, Seagate started to develop high speed drives and is notable for introduction of the industries first 7200 rpm hard drive which was called the Barracuda. Not content with just a 7200 rpm spin speed Seagate went on to produce drives with 10,000 and 15,000 spin speeds as well namely the cheetah and the X15.
In 2006 Seagate went on to acquire its arch rival Maxtor in a deal worth just shy of 2 billion dollars and subsequently went on to expand it consumer offerings.
Seagate drives are now found in all manner of consumer and business products requiring storage including laptops and notebooks, desktop computers, servers and games consoles as well as digital recording equipment etc.
