Within 24 hours of writing an article about the rise in demand for our data recovery labs during the summer heatwave the isolated thunder storms also triggered lightening strikes to a number of substations accross England.

The UK electricity supply network known as the "National Grid" delivers the UK with electricty supplies accross country using overhead power lines. Indeed one of the customers worked for the electrcity distibution company.

The power electrical power generated by regional power stations is distributed by the National Grid with the most obvious distibution cables terminating near to towns and cities at the primary substations. These step down the voltage and then supply local substations through a mixture of overhead and underground cabling. From these substations local businesses and homes are supplied with their electricity supplies.

Whilst the grid and the substations are designed to operate under all weather conditions, and are protected against damage from lightening there is always  a weak point to any system.

Post disaster recovery analysis of why a computer network becomes affected shows that a surge in power can get through surge protectors and take out motherboards and Hard drives or USB connections. If at that instant a drive is being accessed it could cause corruption to the file system and on accessing the drive again folders and files may be inaccessible or the drive just does not show up in the BIOS at all.

 Often it is the company or household which  is the weakest point in an electrical supply system, over burdened plug sockets, over rated fuses and poorly connected plugs and wall sockets can all cobtribute to a catastrphic failure of your data storage device.
