on working hard drives.
When it comes to your hard drive a head crash is a very serious matter and if you think you may have had one cease using the drive immediately, if the drive contains valuable data consult a data recovery expert before attempting to copy data from the drive.
The disk has a standard spin speed drive (7200 rpm) are spinning at a staggering 120kph or thereabouts and 10 and 15,000 spin speed disks travel even faster. A head crash is when the read write heads actually come into contact with the rotating platter and damage the very sensitive magnetised surface.
Continued use of a drive with head crash damage can render a drive totally unrecoverable so don't take any risks if you suspect this to be the case with your drive. If your data has not been backed up it is far better to be safe than sorry.
A head crash can occur when the drive is knocked or dropped whilst it is spinning, or more commonly when power to the drive is stopped whilst it is being written to or read from.
The solution to a head crash is to copy all undamaged sectors of the drive onto a donor or "image" drive and use the donor to recover the data from.
During the imaging process a number of sectors will report as unable to be copied, depending on how many and the concentration of the "bad sectors" will determine the quality of the recovery. Some files may be irretrievably damaged whilst others are in perfect condition.
