Clean Rooms for Hard Disk Drive repair
When a hard disk drive is opened it is important that no dust particles are allowed to come in contact with the platters or heads.
Always use a reputable data recovery lab which has a certified clean room. A laminar Flow cabinet is can achieve ISO-5 but a clean room can achieve ISO-3 Certification
Any data recovery company which claims a class 100 clean room will be able to provide its ISO 14644-1 classification.
The clean room standards were previously defined by the now defunct Fed209e classification but still referred to by some data recovery companies.
A Class 100 clean room status was the minimum standard needed for hard disk drive repairs prior to 2004, with Class 10 and Class 1 ratings needed for the repair and rebuild of modern high capcity drives. As early as 1999 it was realised that the Fed209e scale would need to be replaced once clean room standards beyond class 1 were required and so the British Standard BS 14644 was adopted by the International Standards Organisation (ISO) as the replacement for Fed209e.
For any disk drive above 250GB or greater (Terrabyte Drives TB) it is now reccommended to have an ISO 14644-1 Class 3 certified cleanroom.
Clean room certification is conducted annually and involves applying testing procedures defined by ISO 14644-2 and the laser testing equipment itself has to comply with annual recertification procedures.
The most successful data recovery labs have ISO-3 certified clean rooms to maximise the success rates of any rebuild.
Success rates of rebuilds in a class 100 (ISO-5) environment for terrabyte drives is below 50% this rises to over 90% in a class 1 (ISO-3) facility.
Any lab claiming a "certified clean room" will be able to produce independant test certificate with their particulate score on which the rating is based.
If they cannot provide the certificate they cannot be sure they are working to the required standard.
