Computer Forensics

The requirement for computer forensics investigations seems to grow year by year as we tend to keep more of our data in digital format. Forensic investigators tend to have specialised training and/or years of experience in electronic discovery and the gathering of digital evidence for both police investigations and as expert witnesses for both crime investigation and corporate and enterprise data recovery.

Forensic recovery is often required when disgruntled employees have erased critical data and also where there have been potential accountancy problems, data discrepancies and misappropriations.

Computer forensic companies don't only conduct business and computer fraud investigations though, increasingly computer evidence is being used in civil cases, matrimonial disputes and civil disputes where digital evidence recovery may be the deciding factor in any litigation.

Computer Forensics Explained

Computer forensics or digital forensics as it is also known is the investigation and collection of digital data in all its forms either from magnetic media or from solid state drives.

Computer forensic experts can be called upon for a wide variety of reasons ranging from tracking inappropriate deletion of corporate data through to criminal fraud and deception.

Due to the nature of this type of investigation there are a lot of protocols to be observed both during and after the forensic investigation to ensure a full audit trail is available should the investigation involve civil or criminal proceedings.

For example; much like in a data recovery situation (if the recovery company is doing a good job) computer forensics often rely on the actual copying of the drive that is under suspicion in the form of a special disk image. The source drive can then be securly stored to prevent any further tampering, whilst the computer forensic investigator can conduct a full examination on a copy of the originating data in a secure environment without the fear of contaminating or destroying the source evidence.

Anyone seeking a career in this field would be advised to ensure they attend recognised computer forensic training or for anyone interested in gaining a greater understanding of digital forensic examination below is a small list of further resources and material so you can gain a greater insight into the world of computer forensics.
